Choose between open-frame and enclosed generators using the site's needs and evidence for each quoted build. The construction label alone cannot prove noise, weather protection, cooling or service access. Power ratings, fuel, waveform, emissions and compliance need their own records too.

This guide supports a side-by-side procurement decision. It does not approve installation, placement, ventilation, exhaust, electrical protection, handling, fuel systems, fire controls, or a BEAR model for a particular site.

Keep construction labels separate from performance claims

Preserve the supplier’s exact wording. Open-frame, enclosed, canopied, silent, sound-attenuated, and weatherproof are not interchangeable terms. A quotation should state which physical construction is included, then support any acoustic or environmental claim separately.

Neither format wins every task. An open unit may still have difficult service access; an enclosure does not by itself prove weather protection or lower noise. Compare weight, price, safety, cooling and security only from records for the exact build and proposed site.

Match the quoted model and frame or enclosure to the drawings. Then cross-check the fitted panels, doors, locks, guards, wheels, drains, handling items, controls and options. A photo of a similar unit can suggest questions but cannot prove what ships.

Define the site and workflow before comparing builds

Record the operating location and the state in which the set will be deployed or installed. Indoor, outdoor, open-sided, sheltered, or compartmented are site descriptions, not approvals.

Group the site inputs so none gets lost in a general “outdoor use” statement:

  • Weather and climate: rain, moisture, dust, heat, cold, altitude and humidity.
  • Exposure: salt or corrosion, vibration, impact, falling objects and pests.
  • Storage and access: storage conditions, public access, theft and tampering.

Name the owner of each critical constraint and any later change. These are review inputs, not proof that either construction meets them.

Add the operating workflow. Who inspects the set, starts and observes it, accesses controls, refuels it, cleans the area, services components, removes panels, and recovers the asset? Which doors or panels must be open or removed for those tasks? What access and removal path must remain available?

Assign qualified reviewers for placement, clearance, airflow and exhaust. The project also needs owners for fire controls, electrical connection and protection, drainage, spills and housekeeping. This comparison identifies the work; it does not design or approve it.

Compare environmental and acoustic evidence independently

An enclosure term should not answer an environmental or acoustic question. State the buyer’s actual criterion, then require evidence for the exact quoted build.

For weather and exposure claims, state the condition and whether it applies during operation or storage. Name the evidence owner and any acceptable exclusions. A stated rating or treatment must match the quoted model, enclosure, options and document revision; do not invent missing limits or clearances.

For acoustics, record the required metric, load state, distance, test environment, exact test unit, and evidence owner. One sound number or the word “silent” is not comparable without that basis. Keep the detailed acoustic return tied to the exact quoted configuration and its test scope.

Cooling also needs a configuration-specific review. Request drawings or manuals that identify the inlet and outlet paths, panels, screens, and relevant options. Open space is not proof of adequate cooling, and an enclosure vent is not proof that a proposed placement works. The responsible reviewer must assess the exact layout against the actual site.

Inspect access, security, and service as different tasks

Visible access is not the same as safe, authorized, or workable access. Break the workflow into inspection, routine operation, refuelling, cleaning, scheduled service, fault response, component removal, and asset recovery.

For each task, identify the point to reach and which door or panel must open. Record the working space, tools, handling needs, responsible party and allowed outage window. Match those features to the supplier's drawings and photos of the quoted build.

Security is another separate outcome. A canopy, lockable door, guard, protected control, or frame feature matters only if it is included and addresses the site’s defined public-access or tamper requirement. The site owner still controls fencing, supervision, access policy, and other project measures.

Use these questions for both constructions:

Do not conclude “easy maintenance” from an open frame or “restricted service” from a canopy. The relevant test is whether the exact task can be completed within the site workflow and evidence boundary.

Separate handling state from freight state

Define whether the unit is fixed, skid-mounted, wheeled, trailered, lifted, or handled in another documented state. Record the movement route, recovery owner, and appointed reviewer. Accept dimensions, mass, centre-of-gravity information, and identified handling points only from exact configuration evidence.

Tubes, wheels, handles, hooks, or frame members seen in a photograph must not be treated as approved handling points. This guide gives no lifting, towing, fork, slope, securing, or movement instructions.

Keep product and packed states separate. The quotation should identify what is included in the operating configuration, what changes for shipment, and which packed dimensions and gross mass apply to the freight plan. Product data must not silently populate a container or transport calculation.

Use a sample walk-around to build a discrepancy log

A sample walk-around is a documentation exercise, not an installation, operating, or safety procedure. Its purpose is to connect visible construction to the quotation and controlled documents.

Start the log with the exact model and build, date, quote revision and document set. Add the nameplate or serial identity where available. Views of all sides should show the frame or canopy and the fitted panels, doors, hinges, locks, guards, fasteners and seals.

Use closer views for drains, control access, fuel and service points, cooling openings, the exhaust boundary and handling labels. Each view needs a reference to the relevant matrix row.

For every observation, state whether the item is included, optional, excluded, or site-supplied. Log discrepancies among the sample, quotation, drawings, manuals, tests, and supplied scope. Each row needs the observation, source reference, configuration relevance, response required, owner, gate status, and closure evidence.

Photographs document visible context. They do not prove airflow adequacy, lifting approval, acoustic performance, environmental resistance, placement, compliance, or suitability. An unidentified sample or mixed photo set goes to RETURN; the sample must link to the quoted build or carry an explicit deviation.

This is not a weighted score. A low price, familiar enclosure term, or strong acoustic result cannot compensate for an undefined site condition, missing interface owner, untraceable sample, or configuration conflict.

  • COMPARE: the site requirement is defined, the offered configuration is reconciled, and exact-build evidence supports a side-by-side review.
  • RETURN: supplier evidence is missing, generic, ambiguous, conflicting, tied to another build, or uses an unsupported label in place of proof.
  • HOLD: the buyer or site owner has not defined a critical constraint, workflow, criterion, interface, or responsible party.

Return unsupported labels such as “silent,” “weatherproof” or “easy maintenance.” Also flag a noise number without test conditions, protection claims copied across variants, photos of unquoted features and product dimensions used for freight. Inconsistent revisions or an undocumented “equivalent” substitution reopen the affected rows.

Treat those as evidence or ownership gaps, not proof of defect, non-compliance, or supplier misconduct. Stop comparison while a critical row remains RETURN or HOLD.

Send both suppliers the same site description, noise criterion and duty reference. Include the access and service workflow, handling and freight needs, destination, review owners, sample plan and change authority.

Require each supplier to return its exact model, options and quote revision with matching drawings and photos. The matrix should link each claim to the relevant test or document, including packed-state data where needed. Mark included, optional and excluded items, and list every deviation before comparing price.
