Compare portable-generator watt labels by exact wording, product and fuel identity, sustained and temporary boundaries, source hierarchy, and load-review handoff.

Do not rank a portable generator by the largest watt number on its carton. Keep running or rated watts separate from starting or other temporary output, and preserve the maker's exact words for the same model, fuel and electrical build. The largest watt number is not the comparison value

A portable-generator label may show both a sustained value and a higher, limited-use value. Terms for that second field include starting, surge, peak and maximum. Large print on the carton does not make it continuous output.

Different manufacturers—and sometimes different document types from one manufacturer—may use different terms. Preserve each source's vocabulary. “Rated” and “running” may be connected in a model-specific document, but the words are not universal synonyms. The same caution applies to starting, surge, peak, maximum, and boost.

Duty classifications remain separate. A running-watts label does not automatically establish prime, standby, or continuous duty. Use the generator duty-rating guide when the purchasing decision depends on those issuer-controlled categories.

Preserve the label exactly as shown

Save the full label image or source file before putting a number in the comparison sheet. Record its exact words, value, unit and language. Add the model, any qualifier, file or page, source revision or date, and the date you captured it.

Do not translate “peak watts” into “starting watts,” remove a maximum qualifier, or promote listing text into a manufacturer rating. When the product title, carton, manual, datasheet, nameplate, and quotation disagree, retain every value with its source identity and return the conflict.

A cropped marketplace image can identify a question, but it cannot resolve document applicability. Ask for the complete label or controlled file tied to the exact offered unit.

Lock the exact product and fuel identity

Tie every watt figure to the exact product. Record the model, variant, revision and SKU or build code, plus its destination version. Keep fuel, voltage, frequency, phase, output arrangement and any selectable mode in their own fields. Add the serial range when the issuer states one.

This matters especially when a multi-fuel product publishes different output pairs by fuel. Do not carry a gasoline value into a propane or natural-gas comparison, or assume that a shared enclosure and model family mean identical ratings.

Keep options visible: outlets, panel, controller settings, economy mode and any parallel arrangement. These can change which source or limit applies. A product photo does not prove that the quote matches the pictured label.

The voltage and frequency checklist owns the destination electrical record. This page keeps its approved result attached to the watt label; it does not decide the electrical configuration.

Separate sustained and temporary fields

Create two primary fields in the comparison sheet:

  • Sustained field: the maker's running or rated output value, using the exact term and stated conditions from the applicable source.
  • Temporary field: the maker's starting, surge, peak, maximum, boost, or other temporary/upper-bound value, again preserving the exact term.

The trace contains no output value, duration, ratio, or load-start result. It keeps the sustained baseline and temporary event in separate controlled records.

Do not fill gaps in the temporary field with an industry assumption. Use the boundary record below and write not documented for any missing term.

Do not calculate a universal ratio between the two fields or average them into a new ranking metric. A large gap may reflect the maker's terminology, measurement boundary, configuration, or marketing presentation. It does not independently prove stronger starting performance.

Build a source register behind every number

Cartons, retail listings, product titles, quotations, BOMs, datasheets, manuals, nameplates, and supplier technical responses have different roles. Record all that matter, but rank applicability before visual polish or numerical size.

The strongest record links the quotation and configuration identity to the current applicable technical source and delivered label. A larger number from a weaker or unrelated source must not displace that chain.

Capture the temporary-output boundary

For each temporary term, request the source's stated limits:

  • How long does the value apply, and when may the event repeat?
  • What recovery or cooldown does the source describe?
  • What method and test load support the value?
  • Which uses, modes and site conditions does it cover?
  • What other restrictions does the source state?

These are supplier-return questions. They do not set default values or a universal test rule.

Also separate headline output from the delivery path. Record outlet, receptacle, panel, conductor, protection, and current-limit questions in their appropriate review. A generator-level watt label does not prove that the same output is available through every receptacle or connection arrangement.

Waveform, harmonic distortion, transient voltage/frequency behavior, and protection coordination stay outside this gate. Keep them as separate technical-review flags rather than implying that a running or peak watt figure covers them.

Separate the generator label from the load starting event

A generator's temporary-output label and a load's starting requirement describe opposite sides of a compatibility question. A numerical comparison between the two headlines does not prove that the actual load will start or that voltage and frequency behavior will remain acceptable.

On the load side, name the exact appliance, tool, motor, drive, pump, compressor or system. Record how it runs and starts, which loads run beside it, and what starts next. Keep the source data and site context with that record. A generic appliance table cannot replace those inputs.

This separation prevents a common shortcut: “generator peak watts exceed appliance starting watts, therefore compatible.” Both values may have different definitions, methods, durations, and conditions, while the system response remains unexamined.

Do not force unlike records into one column. If one maker uses “surge” and another uses “peak,” compare them only when their controlled definitions and boundaries are sufficiently aligned. Otherwise preserve both terms and return or hold the row.

Make a COMPARE, RETURN, or HOLD decision

Check each gate on its own. A clear temporary number cannot fill a missing sustained field. A manual for another fuel mode cannot validate the quote. A nameplate cannot resolve an open load-start question.

  • COMPARE: exact product/fuel/electrical identity, sustained and temporary terms, boundaries, and source chain align on a usable basis.
  • RETURN: a supplier-owned label, file, definition, configuration link, or boundary can plausibly be clarified or corrected.
  • HOLD: sources conflict, temporary meanings cannot be aligned, or a separate load-start, transient, sizing, or other qualified review remains material.

Return the row if it uses the largest carton number as rated output or treats peak, surge and starting as automatic synonyms. Do the same if it copies values between fuels, omits the output configuration, or replaces the applicable manual with a listing. Missing temporary-output limits and unreviewed load-start data remain open questions, not evidence of a match.

Send the supplier your exact model and build request, destination, fuel and electrical fields. State which labels you want to compare and which load questions remain open.
